Some children turn to teddy bears or favorite blankets for comfort and security, while others turn to thumbsucking when they are in need of a little self-soothing. Although thumbsucking is a natural and common reflex for children, it can cause dental issues as their permanent teeth come in.
How the Damage is Done?
Thumbsucking can cause a child’s teeth to become misaligned and can interfere with the way the roof of their mouth changes as it grows. Many children grow out of their need for pacifiers, and parents can take these away when appropriate, but the habit of thumbsucking is harder to break.
The damage done by thumbsucking often depends on the intensity of the habit. If children simply rest their thumb in their mouth for comfort, there is a decreased chance of dental problems compared to those who suck their thumb actively and forcefully. When done continuously and with a great deal of pressure, thumbsucking can lead to issues with the child’s primary teeth.
Most children stop thumbsucking by age four, which is the age when they typically start to gain permanent teeth. However, if your child is still self-soothing by thumbsucking at an older age, or if you see changes in the alignment of your baby’s primary teeth, you may need to help them break the habit to prevent damage to their teeth and mouth.
Tips to End Thumbsucking
The first rule of preventing thumbsucking habit is to not pressure children and stay calm. Give them praise when they don’t suck their thumb for extended periods of time and consider giving them something else to focus on, such as a soft toy, for comfort, if they use thumbsucking as a soothing mechanism. Be sure to help them work through anxieties and fears in a healthy way and give them lots of love and affection to make them feel secure.
If your child is older, empower them by including them.If they are actively involved in the plan to prevent bad habits, they will be more likely to stick with it. If necessary, ask your child’s dentist to talk to them about the importance of ending their thumbsucking habit by detailing what could happen if they continue.
